In summer, Dalian Xinghai Square.

Shenyang Imperial Palace: Capital of Two Generations of Emperors
#

Shenyang Imperial Palace is one of China’s two existing palace architectural complexes, the imperial palace before the Qing Dynasty entered the pass.

Dazheng Hall was built by Nurhaci, an octagonal building blending Manchu, Mongolian, and Han styles. Chongzheng Hall was Huang Taiji’s office, solemn and dignified. Wensu Pavilion houses the “Complete Library of the Four Treasuries,” a royal library.

Compared to Beijing’s Forbidden City, Shenyang Imperial Palace is smaller but has more Manchu character. Walking through the palace, imagining Nurhaci and Huang Taiji strategizing here, feel the history of the Qing Dynasty’s rise.

Dalian: Romantic City of the North

Dalian is one of China’s most romantic seaside cities, “Pearl of the North.”

Xinghai Square is Asia’s largest city square—you can see the sea, feed seagulls, fly kites. Binhai Road is Dalian’s most beautiful road, with mountains on one side and sea on the other—picturesque scenery along the way. Tiger Beach Ocean Park allows you to see polar animals and marine life—a great place for family trips.

Golden Pebble Beach has unique marine erosion landforms, “Dinosaur Exploring the Sea” and “Great Peng Spreading Wings”—lifelike. Discovery Kingdom is a large theme park, suitable for young people and families.

Panjin Red Beach is the world’s largest reed wetland. Every autumn, seablite grass turns red, forming a red ocean.

Red beach, golden reeds, blue sky, white migratory birds form a colorful picture. Boardwalk is the best route to view Red Beach—you can take a boat through the reeds.

Benxi Water Cave: Underground Wonder

Benxi Water Cave is the world’s largest water-filled karst cave, “Treasure of the North.”

Inside the cave, stalactites are in various shapes, with an underground river winding through. Take a boat through the cave, seeing all kinds of strangely shaped stalactites, marveling at nature’s uncanny workmanship.

Zhang Xueliang’s Former Residence is the official residence of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang father and son, “Commander’s Mansion.”

Yalu River Broken Bridge

Dandong Yalu River Broken Bridge is a historical witness of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.

The bridge was bombed by US forces, with only half remaining standing in the river. Standing on the broken bridge, seeing Sinuiju, North Korea on the opposite bank, feel the vicissitudes of history.

Liaoning Cuisine
#

Liaoning cuisine is mainly Northeast dishes, large portions and affordable. Guobaorou is a Northeast famous dish, crispy outside and tender inside, sweet and sour. Little Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms is a Northeast classic, with tender chicken and fragrant mushrooms. Sour Cabbage with White Meat is Northeast people’s home-style dish, with appetizing sour cabbage and fatty but not greasy white meat.

Dalian Seafood is even more famous—sea urchins, scallops, sea cucumbers, abalone—fresh and cheap. Shenyang Chicken Skeleton is Shenyang people’s favorite—roasted or stewed, both delicious.

Travel Tips

  • Transportation: Shenyang and Dalian both have airports and high-speed rail stations, convenient transportation. High-speed rail from Shenyang to Dalian takes about 1.5 hours.
  • Accommodation: In Shenyang, stay near Zhongjie or Taiyuan Street; in Dalian, stay near Xinghai Square or Tiger Beach.
  • Note: Northeast is cold in winter—keep warm. Dalian is crowded in summer—book accommodation in advance.
