The Story#
A long, long time ago, heaven and earth had not yet separated. The whole universe was like a giant egg.
Inside this “big egg,” a giant named Pangu was sleeping. He slept and slept for eighteen thousand years!
One day, Pangu woke up. He opened his eyes and found everything was dark. He couldn’t see anything at all.
“Oh my, it’s so dark! I want to get out!” Pangu shouted.
He reached out his hand and found a big axe. Pangu swung it with all his strength—
“BOOM!”
The big egg cracked open! The light things floated up and became the blue sky. The heavy things sank down and became the earth.
Pangu was so happy! But he worried that heaven and earth might close together again. So he held up the sky with his head and stepped on the earth with his feet.
Every day, the sky rose higher, the earth grew thicker, and Pangu grew taller too.
Like this, another eighteen thousand years passed. The sky became very high, the earth became very thick, and Pangu became a super giant reaching from earth to heaven!
Little friends, Pangu was too tired. He fell down. What did his body become?
His breath became wind and clouds. His voice became thunder. His eyes became the sun and moon. His blood became rivers. His muscles became land. His hair became trees and flowers.
Pangu created this beautiful world with his own body!
What the Story Teaches Us#
Pangu worked for eighteen thousand years to separate heaven and earth. He teaches us to be brave and persistent, and to work hard for good things.
