The Story#
A long, long time ago, there was an old man named Yugong. He was already ninety years old.
In front of Yugong’s house stood two big mountains—Mount Taihang and Mount Wangwu. These mountains were so high they blocked the way, making it very inconvenient to go out.
Yugong thought: “I want to move these two mountains away!”
He called his whole family together and told them his idea.
His sons said: “Good! Let’s do it together!”
His grandsons said: “We’ll help too!”
The next day, Yugong led his children and grandchildren to start digging the mountains.
“Heave-ho! Heave-ho!”
They dug with hoes and carried dirt in baskets, working up a sweat.
An old man named Zhisou saw this and laughed at Yugong: “You’re so old, how can you possibly move two big mountains?”
Yugong said: “When I die, I have sons. When my sons die, they have sons. Grandsons and great-grandsons will go on forever, but the mountains won’t grow any higher. Someday we’ll move them!”
The gods in heaven were moved by Yugong’s spirit. They sent two strong gods to carry the two mountains away.
From then on, there were no more mountains blocking Yugong’s door.
Little friends, although Yugong was old, he had a persistent spirit!
