The Story#
A long, long time ago, there was a kind girl named Lin Moniang by the sea in Fujian.
Moniang was very clever from childhood. She could predict the weather, knowing when it would be windy and when it would rain.
Many fishermen lived in the village, going out to sea every day to fish. Moniang always reminded them: “The wind is strong today, don’t go out!” or “The weather is good today, you can go!”
The fishermen listened to Moniang and stayed safe.
One day, a big storm suddenly came on the sea.
“Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!”
Moniang’s brother and father were fishing at sea, in great danger!
Moniang closed her eyes, and her spirit flew to the sea. She used her power to save her brother and father.
From then on, Moniang worked even harder to help fishermen. She saved many people in danger, and everyone called her “Goddess.”
After Moniang passed away, people built temples by the sea in her memory, honoring her as “Goddess Mazu.”
Before going out to sea, fishermen would pray to Mazu for safety.
Now, many people around the world believe in Mazu. She has become the protector of the sea.
Little friends, Mazu’s story tells us that kindness and bravery can protect many people!
