The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Greek mythology, there was a shiny golden apple.
Once, the gods held a banquet but didn’t invite Eris, the goddess of discord.
Eris was angry. She secretly threw a golden apple at the banquet.
The golden apple had written on it: “For the fairest goddess!”
Three goddesses wanted this golden apple: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
They argued and argued, none willing to give in.
Finally, they decided to let a mortal judge.
This mortal was named Paris, a handsome shepherd.
Hera said: “Choose me, and I’ll make you a king!” Athena said: “Choose me, and I’ll make you the wisest!” Aphrodite said: “Choose me, and I’ll let you marry the most beautiful woman in the world!”
Paris thought about it and gave the golden apple to Aphrodite.
Hera and Athena were angry. They swore to take revenge on Paris.
Later, Paris married the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen. But Helen was already someone else’s wife.
This started a great war—the Trojan War.
Little friends, a tiny golden apple caused such big trouble!
