The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Norse mythology, there was a god named Balder. He was the god of light, the most beautiful and kind god.
Balder had a dream: “I will die!”
The gods were worried and asked Frigg, the goddess of love, to protect Balder.
Frigg went to everything in the world and said: “Don’t hurt Balder!”
Everything promised: “I won’t hurt Balder!”
But Frigg forgot one thing—the mistletoe plant.
One day, the gods were playing a game. They threw things at Balder to see if he would get hurt.
“Whoosh! Bang! Splash!”
Everything missed Balder. He was safe!
But Loki, the trickster god, found out about the mistletoe.
Loki made an arrow from mistletoe wood and gave it to Balder’s blind brother, Hodr.
“Throw this at Balder,” Loki said.
Hodr threw the arrow—
“Whoosh!”
The arrow hit Balder! Balder fell to the ground and died.
All the gods were heartbroken. They tried everything to bring Balder back, but nothing worked.
The gods were very angry at Loki and punished him severely.
Little friends, Balder’s story teaches us: even the most powerful things can be hurt if we’re not careful.
