The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Egyptian mythology, there was a god named Anubis.
He had the head of a jackal.
Anubis was the god of the dead and the protector of souls.
When people died, their souls went to the underworld.
Anubis would check if the souls were good.
He had a special scale called the Scale of Truth.
On one side of the scale, he put the person’s heart.
On the other side, he put a feather.
The feather was from the goddess Maat, the goddess of truth.
If the heart was light, it meant the person was good.
“Whoosh!”
The scale went down on the feather side.
The person could go to the afterlife happily.
If the heart was heavy, it meant the person had done bad things.
“Boom!”
The scale tipped to the heart side.
The heart was eaten by a monster called Ammit.
The person could not go to the afterlife.
Anubis was fair. He always weighed hearts carefully.
Little friends, Anubis taught people to be good.
If you are good, your heart will be light.
