The Story
#

A long, long time ago, in Egyptian mythology, there was a fierce goddess named Sekhmet.

She had the head of a lioness and the body of a woman.

Sekhmet was the goddess of war and healing.

She could fight enemies and heal sick people.

The pharaohs asked Sekhmet for help when they went to war.

They also asked her to heal their people when they were sick.

Sekhmet was very powerful, but she could also be dangerous.

Once, the sun god Ra sent Sekhmet to punish humans.

Humans had done bad things, so Ra wanted to destroy them.

Sekhmet became very angry. She attacked people like a lion.

“Roar! Scratch! Bite!”

Many people were hurt.

Ra felt sorry for them. He wanted to stop Sekhmet.

Ra had an idea. He ordered his servants to make 7,000 jars of beer and wine.

They poured the beer and wine into a river.

“Whoosh!”

The river became red and smelled like wine.

Sekhmet drank the red liquid.

“Yummy!” she said. “This is good!”

Sekhmet became drunk and fell asleep.

The people were saved!

From then on, Sekhmet was still the goddess of war, but she also protected people from disease.

Little friends, Sekhmet teaches us: even powerful things can be controlled with wisdom.
