The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Indian mythology, there was a god named Shiva.
He was the god of destruction and rebirth.
Shiva had a special power: he could control water.
One day, a king named Bhagiratha wanted to bring the holy river Ganges down to earth.
The Ganges was in the sky. It was very powerful.
If it came down directly, it would flood the earth!
Shiva said: “I can help you.”
Shiva stood under the river.
“Whoosh!”
The Ganges water flowed into Shiva’s hair.
The water went down through Shiva’s hair and came out slowly.
It became a gentle river on earth.
The river was called the Ganges.
People used the Ganges water to bathe and pray.
They believed it could wash away their sins.
Bhagiratha’s ancestors were saved.
Shiva was a powerful but kind god.
He controlled the dangerous water to help people.
Little friends, Shiva taught people how to use water safely.
