The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Indian mythology, there was a beautiful river goddess named Ganga.
She was the daughter of the sky god. She wore white clothes and rode on a crocodile.
Ganga lived in the sky, flowing as part of the Milky Way.
There was a king named Bhagiratha whose ancestors had done bad things. Their souls couldn’t rest.
Bhagiratha wanted to use Ganga’s water to wash away his ancestors’ sins.
He prayed for many, many years.
Finally, the gods agreed. Ganga would come down to help.
But Ganga’s water was too powerful! If she fell directly, she would flood the whole earth!
Shiva, the god of destruction and rebirth, stood up and caught Ganga with his hair.
“Whoosh!”
Ganga’s water flowed into Shiva’s hair and slowly came down to earth.
Ganga also came down with her.
