The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Japanese mythology, there was a god named Izanagi and a goddess named Izanami.
They lived in a place called Takamagahara, the high plain of heaven.
The world below was dark and empty. There was no land, no sea, no sky.
Izanagi and Izanami wanted to create the world.
They stood on the floating bridge of heaven and looked down.
“Izanagi, take this jeweled spear and stir the ocean below!” Izanami said.
Izanagi took the jeweled spear and stirred the dark ocean.
“Whoosh! Whoosh!”
Water dripped from the spear.
The drops of water became an island called Onogoro.
Izanagi and Izanami climbed down to the island.
They stood on the island and married.
From their marriage, many gods were born:
The sea god, the wind god, the fire god, the mountain god…
They created all the islands of Japan.
Then they created the sun, the moon, and the stars.
Finally, they created humans.
The world was complete!
Little friends, Izanagi and Izanami created the world together. This story teaches us: working together with someone we love can create beautiful things.
