The Story#
A long, long time ago, in Native American mythology, there was a clever animal named Coyote.
Coyote was a trickster. He was funny and mischievous.
At first, there was only water everywhere. No land, no sky, no plants.
Coyote wanted to create the world.
He found a giant turtle.
“Ah! I have an idea!” Coyote said.
He pushed the turtle into the water.
“Whoosh!”
The turtle became an island.
Coyote said: “I need more land.”
He found a basket of dirt.
He poured the dirt on the turtle’s back.
“Whoosh!”
The dirt spread out and became more land.
Coyote created mountains and rivers.
He created plants and animals.
He created people.
Coyote was happy with his work.
But Coyote was also mischievous.
He played tricks on people sometimes.
He made mistakes too.
But Coyote taught people how to live in the world.
Little friends, Coyote was clever and created the world.
