The Story#
A long, long time ago, in African mythology, there was a debate between the sun and the moon.
The sun said: “I’m the most important! I give light to everyone!”
The moon said: “No, I’m more important! I light up the night!”
They argued back and forth, but couldn’t agree.
An old woman named Anansi the Spider heard them.
“Let me settle this,” Anansi said.
Anansi took a big pot and put it in the middle of the village.
“Whoever can fill this pot first wins!” Anansi said.
The sun tried to fill it with light, but the light was too weak.
The moon tried to fill it with moonlight, but it wasn’t strong enough.
Anansi filled the pot with water from a river.
“Water is more useful than light!” Anansi said.
The sun and the moon were both disappointed.
But Anansi said: “Actually, you both have important jobs. The sun gives light during the day, and the moon lights up the night.”
The sun and the moon realized they needed each other.
Little friends, the sun and the moon teach us: everyone has their own special job, and we all need each other!
