The Story
#

A long, long time ago, in Polynesian mythology, there was a clever demigod named Maui.

He had magical powers. He could change his size and shape.

One day, Maui said: “I want to fish up islands from the ocean!”

His brothers laughed: “You can’t do that! Islands are too big!”

Maui didn’t listen. He made a fishing line from the fibers of a coconut tree.

He tied a hook to the line and a heavy stone to the hook.

He threw the fishing line into the deep ocean.

“Whoosh!”

The hook sank deep into the ocean.

Maui pulled the line carefully. “Pull… pull… pull…”

Suddenly, the line was heavy!

“Whoa! Something big is on the hook!” Maui shouted.

He pulled and pulled. The ocean started to shake.

“Boom! Boom!”

An island came up from the ocean!

Maui and his brothers were amazed!

They fished up more islands one by one.

They created many islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The people settled on these islands and built homes.

Maui also made the sun slower.

“Hey! You’re moving too fast!” Maui said to the sun.

He caught the sun and tied it down.

The sun asked: “Please let me go!”

Maui said: “Okay, but you must move slower.”

Since then, the sun has moved slowly across the sky.

Little friends, Maui was clever and creative. He taught us to use our imagination and skills to create new things.
