The Story

A long, long time ago, in Japan, there was a race between a tortoise and a crane.

The tortoise was slow. The crane could fly.

The animals gathered to watch.

“Who will win?” they asked.

The race began.

The tortoise walked slowly: “Step, step, step.”

The crane flew quickly: “Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!”

The crane was far ahead.

But the crane saw a river on the way.

The river was wide, and there was no bridge.

The crane couldn’t cross the river.

The crane waited and waited.

The tortoise arrived at the river.

“Step, step, step.”

The tortoise saw the crane waiting.

“Get on my back!” the tortoise said.

The crane got on the tortoise’s back.

“Whoosh!”

The tortoise swam across the river with the crane on his back.

The crane flew ahead again.

They reached the finish line together.

They were tied!

The animals cheered: “A great race!”

The tortoise and the crane became friends.
