A City “Dug” from Rock
#

Can you imagine an entire city carved out of rock?

Not built brick by brick, but chiseled directly from cliff faces — removing the excess to leave behind buildings.

This is Petra — a “stone city” hidden in a desert canyon in Jordan.

The Wisdom of the Nabataeans
#

Petra was built by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago.

The Nabataeans were one of the ancient world’s greatest “merchants.” They controlled important trade routes along the Silk Road, transporting Arabian spices and Indian gems to the Mediterranean.

With their profits, they built cities. Petra was their capital.

The Treasury
#

Petra’s most famous building is the “Treasury” (Al-Khazneh).

It’s 40 meters tall and 25 meters wide, with elaborate columns and statues, all carved from a single block of sandstone.

Why “Treasury”? Legend has it that an Egyptian pharaoh’s treasure is hidden in the urn at the top. Supposedly there are bullet marks on it — from treasure hunters who shot at it to see if there was really gold inside.

The Rose-Red City
#

Petra’s rock is red — deep red, light red, orange-red, pink-red, all kinds of red intertwined.

Especially at sunrise and sunset, when sunlight hits the rocks, the entire city looks like a blooming rose.

That’s why Petra is also called the “Rose-Red City.”

The Secret of Water
#

Building a city in the desert, the biggest problem is water.

The Nabataeans were brilliant water engineers. They built complex systems of aqueducts, cisterns, and reservoirs to bring spring water from far away into the city.

In Petra, you can even see remains of fountains and gardens — in the desert!

Petra’s Disappearance
#

The Nabataeans were later conquered by the Roman Empire, and Petra gradually declined.

Trade routes changed, people left, and Petra was swallowed by the desert.

Until 1812, when a Swiss explorer disguised as an Arab rediscovered it.

Learn from the World

Petra teaches us one thing: the most precious things are often hidden in the hardest-to-find places.

Petra was hidden in a desert canyon, nearly forgotten by the world. But because it was so well hidden, it was so well preserved.

Sometimes, being “low-key” is the best protection.
