Mountains Growing in the Sky
#

Can you imagine a mountain that isn’t connected, but made of individual stone pillars?

In Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, over 3,000 stone pillars rise from the ground, the tallest reaching over 300 meters.

They stand like a forest of stone, each one rising above a sea of clouds.

The floating mountains in the movie “Avatar” were designed based on Zhangjiajie.

How Were They Formed?
#

How did these stone pillars come to be?

About 300 million years ago, this was still an ocean. Thick sandstone deposited on the seafloor.

Later, tectonic uplift exposed the sandstone above water. Over hundreds of millions of years of wind and rain erosion, soft rock was worn away while hard rock remained — forming these stone pillars.

Like a sculptor removing excess stone to leave behind a “masterpiece.”

Tianmen Mountain
#

Zhangjiajie also has a Tianmen Mountain — with a massive hole in it called Tianmen Cave.

Tianmen Cave is 131 meters tall and 57 meters wide, like a giant “stone gate.”

To reach Tianmen Cave, you first take the world’s longest cable car (7,455 meters), then climb 999 steps.

Legend says that climbing these 999 steps will make “all your wishes come true.”

The Glass Bridge
#

Zhangjiajie also has a glass bridge — spanning between two mountains, 430 meters long, with a completely transparent glass floor.

Standing on the bridge, you’re looking down at a 300-meter-deep canyon.

Looking down, you feel like you’re floating in the air — people with weak knees might go soft-legged.

Cloud Sea and Sunrise
#

Zhangjiajie’s most beautiful sight is the sea of clouds.

At dawn, clouds fill the valleys, and the tops of the stone pillars emerge above the cloud sea, like islands in an ocean.

The sun rises from the cloud sea, painting the entire sky gold — as beautiful as a fairyland.

Zhangjiajie teaches us one thing: time is the greatest artist.

300 million years of wind and rain carved these stone pillars.

No matter how powerful humans are, we can’t create such “works.” Nature uses time and patience to create the most magnificent scenery.
